Here’s another animated series that I absolutely enjoy. I’m glad to see better cartoons coming from Nickelodeon.

A very interesting world. Element manipulators grouped into nations. A child to save them all who can manipulat all 4.

The King of Long Movies

January 2, 2006

I am not a fan of the plot of King Kong. The big ape captures the girl, gets her so dizzy and she almost gets killed and gobbled trying to escape then she falls in love with her captor…I must watch that James Bond film again and check the name of that complex. Worse it was almost 3 hours long! I fell asleep!

Still I love the effects that they used on the island, especially the way they made the creepy crawlies. Though I knew I was safe in the cinema, I couldn’t help but empathize with “Anne” as she screams as the bugs were tasting her in the log. And ugh! the thought of cockroaches that big! We need a lot of bugspray!

Favorite scene: I loved the Kong Ice Sit-skating in central park. It was such a nice moment, if only it wasn’t an ape involved.

I have to admit that I felt the start was a waste. They could have just started from the arrival at the island and then all the way to the end. I slept through the last maybe 20 minutes so I can’t give you much detail except that I know they did the empire state with big ape on top scene.

Beauty killed the beast? I don’t think so. Greed killed the beast… Why do these guys always blame the woman? It was Jack Black’s character that started the whole thing and it was his negligence and avarice and pride that made it in the end tragic for Kong.

Still, not a bad remake.

Mulawin the Movie

December 29, 2005

I have never been into Filipino films. Most are just too cheesy or too impossible. I mean, come on, do we really always cry and slap each other? Are our lives really so full of drama and action? Do we really have such fantastic cops and robbers?

Still, when my friends invited me to watch Mulawin, I was interested. After all, the TV series was ok and it would be nice to support the local artists. I found the concept. storyline of the story very interesting and I had heard good things about the movie.

So how was it? The movie was ok. Nice integration of Encantadia into Mulawin. Eddie Gutierrez was a very convincing Villian and I liked the acting of Carmina Villaroel.  It was nice that they took the time to make the story understandable even by those who had not seen the TV series. Good try on the whole to make a creditable fantasy movie.

I still wasn’t impressed though. The story was so bland and typical. A romance between the 2 who will save their world being the focus. Just in time they find each other again because their kind is being massacred.

Setting aside the special effects because we really still have a long way to go there, I was most disappointed in the lack of preparation of the actors for their fight scenes (what with Angel Locsin squeeking like a mouse while she’s fighting or going “yah!’ periodically). Filipino films have always had a high standard for action and here, the fighting forms were not well executed…maybe the actors didn’t have enough time to practice. Dingdong Dantes, Richard Gutierrez and only this one girl came close to the form I expected to see. Couldn’t they be bothered to make those fight scenes look good? Also, the scenes were so slow, you could see their oppnents waiting for the attack. We are better than that!

Was it a great movie…not by a long shot. But I appreciate that we are at least trying to get more creative and not stick to the sampalan-iyakan movies of old. But, boy, we have a long way to go!

The New Gladiators

October 1, 2005

We may no longer have lions and christians or gladiators in the coliseum but the gladiators are still fighting. The arena has simply changed. It is now called television.

Was the first picture in your mind a sport? Wrestling or boxing maybe? While these are similar to the olden days when physical strength and cunning was the basis for winning…that wasn’t what I had in mind. They may be athletes but it just seems so barbaric and gory to me…people beating each other up for money while the crowd cheers as they injure each other. Not something I feel we should be proud of.

I actually meant shows like the Amazing Race (I cheered myself hoarse when Uchenna & Joyce won AR7), the Apprentice (season 1 is still my favorite) and the one I saw earlier, Hell’s Kitchen. Fantastic shows. All of these reality shows have a trait or skill that is honed during its season. I like the way they compete head to head and usually get taken out simply because they came in last compared to everyone else or because they did not have the necessary skill to win the challenge, no blood and gore and it’s wholesome to boot!!! And they get a prize commensurate to the skill they display, money and vacation trips, a position in the billion dollar industry/company or as I saw earlier a restaurant worth $2M and fantastic training.

The concept of the show Survivor  was okay but it didn’t really appeal to me. I really dislike Temptation Island, Pinoy Big Brother and the like. Why do people watch these shows? Do they take pleasure in watching these peoples’ relationships fail or be made to perform like puppets on strings? For some is it just about watching others struggle to be the “survivor”? Or is it about watching people who will do anything for time on TV and money? Do they feel envy that they’re not the ones in the show or is fascination that people put themselves through such things? It seems like a pissing contest or a game of one upmanship  in these shows.

I’m just glad that I’m not stuck watching the sports kind or the puppet kind. Thank goodness for cable TV and the internet to help give more options.
